T H E S O C C E R G A M E I I
The object of this outstanding game is to become a successful manager of a
football team. At the outset you are contracted for a number of years to a
fourth division team. From this lowly base you try to build up a reputation
which ensures other teams have an avid interest in desiring your managerial
qualities to be present at their club. Consequently, when your contract expires
you may, if you're extremely talented, get offered a contract from a first
division team. If, however, you are incompetent as a manager (whether by
spending too much of the club's money, selling too many of their shares,
losing too many matches, etc), your contract will not be renewed and no other
reasonably-minded team will offer you another contract. The game will be over.
Whilst under contract it is still possible for you to be sacked - for gross
misdemeanours - but not possible for you to leave your current club for
another.
Success is measured in a number of ways. Largely it is a personal matter. Some
people may play the game to win a European cup, others only for the FA cup;
some will play the game to amass large sums of money, others to be top of the
super league. Others still will be playing to remain as an active manager
for as many seasons as possible.
The menus use conventional selection methods : the arrow keys on the keypad
move the bar in the corresponding direction; Home moves to the first option;
End moves to the last; Pg Up moves to the top of the column; Pg Dn moves to
bottom of the column. All menus can be MOVED to display any information hidden
beneath them. Ctrl pressed with Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Pg Up and Pg Dn will
enable movement of any menu to any part of the screen.ESC will exit any menu.
The "Soccer Game II" uses an enormous database. Consequently it is not a good
idea to try running this game concurrent with any memory resident program or
on top of another program from a DOS shell. Where possible the error message:
"Not enough memory" should inform you that there is a problem.
The MAIN MENU Options
The F2 Function key :
This toggles the active strip menu. If staff is showing then pressing F2
will change the current options to team (and vice versa).
The TEAM options:
1) The PLAY option :
From here you can play your next match or quit (or quit and save) the game.
The "quit option" checks, firstly, that you have selected the correct option!
and, if verified, asks if you wish to save the game or not. On saving the game
disk space is checked and a warning issued if it is insufficient (around 100K
is required).
2) The HELP option:
Offers you three choices. General help Print-out and Sound off/on.
Selection of "General" will bring up what you are presently reading."Print-out"
will send a copy of this file to your printer. Sound off turns off the speaker,
Sound on turns it on again.
3) The LEAGUE option:
This lists all five league tables (you can move through them with the right and
left arrow keys, f1-f5 or the spacebar - no need to press ENTER). Press P to
get a print out of the current league table.
4) The TEAM option:
Offers manifold options :
to alter a player's name
rearrange the team
sell player
change the current display
toggle display
print out
The "alter name" option lets you change the name of any of your players.
"Rearrange" team option enables you to switch players from one location to
another. This is necessary for moving players from the RESERVES section into
the first eleven. It is assumed that the 11 players above the "reserves" line
are your choice to kick off the next match.
"Sell player" enables you to put a player on the transfer market. You will
be informed later in the game as soon as any club puts in an offer for him.
"Change display" option advances the current display.
All displays show the name and field position of the players. The colour of
each line is determined by the field position of the player:
magenta = goalkeeper/ brown = defender/ blue = midfielder/ yellow = attacker
If the player is injured or has an international commitment the information
will be shown in red.
The bars represent the players abilities in certain areas. The longer the
bar, the better the player. For example, no bar under the Stamina category
means you have a very tired player.
If you have "words" selected the hierarchy, from worst to best, is:
Useless,Bad,Low,Poor,Fair,Average,Good,Superb,Supremo,Ace,GOD
In the display showing matches played and goals scored the figure under the
heading Matches shows the number of matches played by that player this season;
the Total category shows the number of matches he has played since joining the
club. The same applies to the Goals/Total categories.
"Toggle display" changes the displays from bars to words and vice versa.
"Print out" sends current display information to the printer
The STAFF options:
All provide the facility to acquire a new staff member. The better your team,
the more likley you will be to attract interest from other assistants, physios,
scouts and treasurers. Either you will be informed that there is nothing
available (don't give up completely, there are changes every week) or you will
be offered a new member of staff in some form of deal involving your current
employee. Press Y if you agree.
1) The ASSISTANT option:
Enables communication with your assistant manager. He can provide the following
facilities:
to display information about your next opponents
display information about any other team
to provide a fixture list for the season
to air his views
to lay aside money for a youth team
to display information from previous seasons
The "opponents" option displays information about your opponents. It
shows their current line-up (which may change before the match commences). The
display can be changed by pressing the spacebar.
"Check other teams" enables you to choose any of the 100 teams to view. On
selecting a particular team, the squad and staff of that team is displayed.
Again the spacebar changes the current display. Press F1 to change the name of
the team, F2 to change any of the players' names or F3 to change the names of
any staff member.
"Fixture list" displays a list of all league matches you are playing in
that particular season, adding the results as each match is played. All cup
matches are recorded as the games are played. The figure in brackets after the
name of your opponents is their league position at the time you played them.
"Views" gives an indication of how balanced your team is. The assistant may
inform you, for instance, that a defender ought to be given priority in your
transfer market dealings or that you should put more money into the youth team.
"Youth team" enables you to spend money on a youth team. Use the Up Arrow
and Down Arrow to change the amount you wish to spend per week. The Esc key
makes no changes, the spacebar accepts the amount currently on screen as the
amount you finally decide to spend.
"History" shows information from previous seasons. F1 shows where you
finished in the league. F2 lists the winners of the 5 divisions. F3 shows your
top gates, average gates, the most you spent in that season for a single
player, the most you received for selling a player and how much money the club
had at the end of the season. F4 shows your top goalscorer and the number of
goals he scored.
2) The PHYSIO option:
The physio informs you of probable lengths of injuries to players, any players
who need to be rested and any who are ineligible for the game because of
international duty. He is also capable of telling you any number of items of
useless information. The "Staff skills" option displays information about your
own team's staff.
3) The SCOUT option:
"High scorers" lists the top goalscorers from the entire football league -
included are goals scored in any competitive match.
"Monthly awards" displays managers and players of the month for each
division alongside the team they were with at the time the awards were decided.
"Get player" sends the scout out to scan the transfer market for a viable
player for the team. He tries to find the player best suited to the interests
of the club. If he finds one he will tell you how much to bid to ensure the
player will accept your offer. The better the scout, the more likelihood of
him finding some one.
"Transfer market" enables you to attempt to buy any player currently on
the transfer market. The transfer market is a volatile entity, so if you see
some one you want to buy, don't wait until next week! You can change the
displays by pressing the spacebar. To bid for a player press F1, then select
the player you want to buy by using the arrow keys and spacebar. The amount of
money wanted by the respective clubs is negotiable, depending on other offers.
Consequently you can offer more or less money, as you choose. The method of
altering your bid is the same as the "Youth team" option (see above). If you
offer enough the player will request a contract and if the terms of the
contract are agreed to the player will join your club. You can make three bids
before the transfer market closes for the week.
4) The FINANCE option:
Your treasurer can provide the following:
How much money you have
Improving the facilities of your stadium
Shares - buying and selling
Weekly financial statement
Loans
Pools prediction
Bet
"Money" simply tells you how much money is at your disposal.
"Ground capacity" enables you to improve your stadium. You can convert any
terracing into seats, create additional terracing or, if your stadium is
already all-seated, create additional seating. Seating is much more expensive,
but it is necessary to have an all-seated stadium to gain admittance into the
super league. Use the Up and Down Arrows to forecast how much it will cost to
create your desired improvements. Then press the spacebar to put them into
effect or the Esc key to forget it. Any of the function keys will change the
forecasted expenditure from seated to unseated and vice versa.
"Share prices" gives you the current market price of your shares in the club
and enables you to buy or sell them. The share price changes with the fortunes
of your club. Press the appropriate function key to buy or sell, then use the
Up and Down Arrows to forecast how much you will gain or lose from whichever
transaction you are interested in. Press the spacebar to execute the trans-
action or the Esc key if you don't think it's worthwhile. Remember that the
shares belong to the club and are not personally yours. Selling too many will
inevitably cause your sacking.
"Weekly balance" is a cashflow statement showing your income and expenditure
for the last week.
"Loans" offers you the opportunity to borrow money from the bank at an ex-
tortionate interest rate. The better your team, the more money your bank
manager will offer. The figure highlighted is the maximum your bank manager
will lend you. Use the keys on the numeric keypad to state how much you want to
borrow (Left Arrow increases by 5000, Pg Up by 10000, Home by 50000 - Right
Arrow, Pg Dn and End decrease by the same rate). Press the spacebar to get the
loan, or Esc if you don't want it.
"Pools" lets you stake money on predicting either draws or home results
from the five divisions. The option is only available for league matches. To
win the jackpot you need to predict 8 score draws from 10 selected (or predict
all the draws if there are less than 8). You can also win a lesser dividend by
accumulating 21 or more points from your 8 best predictions. If you choose to
predict home wins you must get all 10 correct. The dividend will then depend
on how many home wins there were in total throughout the 5 leagues.
To predict a match to be a draw press the Enter key. An X should appear next
to that match. To predict a home win press F1. An H should appear next to that
match. If you change your mind press any key marked DEL when the bar is over
the correct fixture. The X or H will disappear. If you select the League option
you will be shown the league table for the division which the teams under the
menu bar play in. It is worthwhile doing the pools as the cost is only £1 for
homes or draws.
If you make no changes to your selections the following week your previous
selections are re-used.
"Bet" enables you to bet on your forthcoming match. Press the appropriate
function key to make your bet, Esc if you don't want to bet. To receive any
return from the bookies you must win your match. You cannot bet on friendly
or testimonial matches.
The ALTER UTILITY: This is of use if you require the database to be
changed. It allows you to directly alter all team names, player names and staff
names from the 5 divisions. Saved games will not be affected. But all new games will immediately
access the ALTERed data. Useful, for instance, if you wish to create real life
squads or if you are unhappy with English defaults for divisions 1 to 4.
Some Words Of Advice:
You can play any formation, except you must have 1 (and only 1) goalkeeper.
Try to procure a good scout.
If players are injured or tired then rest them. The more tired they are the
likelier they are to suffer injury and the less use they are to your team.
Some players simply get too old to play, or lose their skills for one reason
or another. There is little you can do. Appease them if they want something.
If they want nothing, sell them.
Do not sell too many shares.
Do not allow yourself an overdraft of more than £50000
Thanks to those of you who took the trouble to complement "The Soccer Game".
If any of you have any features you would like to see included in a possible
third version, please don't hesitate to write.
For any one playing the game at work(!) who doesn't want the boss to know, type
"soccer quiet" from the DOS prompt and you won't be bothered with sound.
CHANGES FROM "THE SOCCER GAME" version 1:
There are now five leagues, the top being a European super league.
Promotion and relegation between the original four divisions is the same: 3 up/
3 down. Entry into the super league is restricted to the winner of the first
division, who must have an all-seated stadium larger than any other
international divisional champion. One team is relegated from the super league,
but only if there is another team able to meet the requirements to take the
place of the relegated team.
Postponed matches have been introduced for league fixtures.
Domestic cup matches now have the results of all matches.
European cup matches are now over two legs.
You can now play any formation you like.
Pools predictions have been included.
All players' names can now be altered as well as the teams and staff.
Information on the transfer market is much more detailed.
All players have the same displayable information.
All teams (except your starting line-up) have a minimum squad of 15 players.
An additional level of difficulty has been introduced for those who found
the old "hard" level too easy.
You now have to improve your stadium to increase ground capacity.
You can hire a youth team.
The fixture list is more detailed, including cup matches as well as league
fixtures.
A detailed history of your success (or otherwise) with the club has been
provided.
